Black History Month 2023, time to inspire, reflect, and celebrate.

This October, Culture Liverpool, Writing on the Wall and Liverpool City Halls are launching a programme of events and exhibitions to celebrate Black History Month.

In commemoration of remarkable milestones in Black History this year; the 75th Anniversary of the arrival of The Empire Windrush in the UK, 50 Years of Hip Hop, and 75 Years of the National Health Service, this year’s campaign is here to inspire, reflect and celebrate contributions made to society by people of Black heritage and their communities.

Reclaiming History

White-washed versions of history have never been more contested and the push for decolonising literature and education, advocating for reparations, and returning stolen artifacts has become central to ongoing discussions indicating that the study and inclusion of black history is essential for society to develop a more complete understanding of human development.

As part of the launch, we have taken a monumental step towards acknowledging the hall’s historical ties to slavery and embracing a more inclusive future. We are proud to announce an initiative to readdress the history of statues in St George’s Hall and reclaim the building as a space for all communities.

For too long, certain statues within the Great Hall have stood as silent witnesses to a painful past, carrying the legacy of individuals associated with the institution of slavery. This re-evaluation is a critical step towards fostering a new environment of education and reflection and making way for a more diverse representation that celebrates contributions of historic black Britons such as Mary Seacole.

The programme, featuring events throughout the city, runs throughout October. Read more about the events below:
