The main work in this concert is the brilliant and uncompromisingly forceful Violin Concerto by Johannes Brahms. Never a composer to indulge in histrionics just for the sake of effect, Brahms has given us a work of the greatest depth and integrity. Some of the world’s best-known soloists refused to perform it on the grounds of its supreme difficulties. Our soloist Jack Liebeck, already a veteran of the concert platform and recording studio, will have no such problems.
The concert starts with the concert overture Cockaigne. Its composer, Edward Elgar described it as ‘…honest, healthy, humourous and strong, but not vulgar….’ It is a ‘cheery and Londony…’ musical picture of that great city and has been a great concert favourite ever since its first performance in 1901. The orchestra will also perform a suite of music from the ballet score to the Sylvia ballet by Léo Delibes. The ever-popular pizzicato from Sylvia always raises a smile, but the rest of the suite will also delight and inspire.
